This pair of gates within its own freestanding ornamental arch were hidden and grown into a hedgerow. They were in a rather sorry state, the bottom of the gates and arch were completely rotten and grown into the roots of the hedge and trees. We had to remove them with an oxy/propane torch and disc cutters. Once removed we took them to the shot blasters for cleaning, then we could assess the damage and what to replace and repair.
The client did not want the gates restored to ‘like new’ preferring to keep something of their age. We decided to only replace what was absolutely necessary to have a safe and functioning gateway. This was part of a much larger restoration project of a walled kitchen garden and a large messenger glasshouse. When the metalwork was complete the gates and arch were then shot blasted, zinc sprayed and finally painted gloss black.
